The Basílica de Guadalupe marks the site of the reported 1531 apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe and houses the cloak (tilma) bearing her image, viewed by pilgrims via a moving walkway beneath the altar. The modern circular basilica seats over 10,000 people and stands beside the older 18th-century church, which has also tilted with the sinking soil.
