Top 10 Photo Spots

The most photogenic locations in Jalisco.

1

Instituto Cultural Cabañas Dome

📸 Any time (interior, no natural light dependency)art/architecture

The Man of Fire fresco in the central dome of Hospicio Cabañas is one of Mexico's most dramatic interior photography subjects. Lie on the floor and shoot straight up through the 57 frescoes surrounding Orozco's masterpiece.

Photo tip: Use a wide-angle lens (16-24mm) to capture the full dome. Set ISO higher for the dim interior. Photography is permitted; no flash.
2

Guadalajara Cathedral Twin Towers at Sunset

📸 Golden hour (5-6:30PM depending on season)architecture

The yellow neogothic twin towers of Guadalajara's Cathedral glow magnificently at sunset. The best position is from the Plaza de Armas to the south, or from across Avenida Hidalgo for a full tower composition.

Photo tip: Position yourself northwest of the cathedral for the setting sun to illuminate the towers. The plaza's fountain makes a classic foreground element.
3

Puerto Vallarta Malecón Sunrise

📸 Sunrise (6-7:30AM)seascape/architecture

The Malecón sculptures are dramatically backlit at sunrise over the Bay of Banderas. The Seahorse sculpture, the Rotunda of the Sea, and the In Search of Reason sculpture by Alejandro Colunga are among the most photogenic along the promenade.

Photo tip: Arrive 20 minutes before sunrise for the blue hour. The pier at Los Muertos beach at the south end of the Malecón offers perfect eastern exposure.
4

Guachimontones Circular Pyramid at Dawn

📸 Sunrise / early morninglandscape/archaeology

The concentric circular pyramids of Guachimontones catch the warm morning light beautifully, with the Tequila Volcano rising in the background. Arriving at opening time (9AM) ensures no other visitors in your frames.

Photo tip: The highest point of the principal pyramid group offers views over the entire archaeological zone — bring a telephoto lens to compress the surrounding agave fields.
5

Los Muertos Beach Pier at Golden Hour

📸 Sunset (late afternoon)seascape

Puerto Vallarta's iconic blue-and-white arched pier at Los Muertos Beach is the city's most photographed landmark. The Pacific sunset behind the Sierra Madre mountains creates extraordinary color. The pier arch framing the ocean is the definitive Puerto Vallarta shot.

Photo tip: The best position is from the beach looking west, with the pier in the foreground and the sun setting over the water. Come at least 30 minutes before sunset to secure space.
6

Ajijic Cobblestone Streets

📸 Morning (8-10AM)street photography

Ajijic's colorful colonial streets — brightly painted houses, flowering bougainvillea spilling over walls, and cobblestones — offer endless photographic compositions. The morning light is soft and side-lit for dramatic textures.

Photo tip: The Calle Morelos area behind the church has particularly colorful facades. The weekly market on Saturday morning adds people and activity.
7

Lake Chapala Reflection at Sunrise

📸 Sunrise (6-7AM)landscape

Mexico's largest lake at dawn, when mist rises from the water and the Sierra de San Juan mountains are reflected perfectly in the still surface. The fishing boats at Chapala's pier add human scale to the vast landscape.

Photo tip: The Chapala Malecón pier provides an elevated platform for water reflections. The mountains across the lake catch the pink light of dawn before sunrise.
8

Tequila Agave Fields and Volcano

📸 Golden hour (either end of day)landscape

The sweeping blue-green agave fields surrounding the town of Tequila with the dormant Tequila Volcano rising in the background create one of Mexico's most distinctive landscapes. The geometry of the agave rows in evening light is extraordinary.

Photo tip: Drive or take the Jose Cuervo Express train for field access. The area around La Rojeña distillery has good elevated views over the agave landscape.
9

Tlaquepaque El Parián at Dusk

📸 Dusk / blue hour (6-7:30PM)architectural

The illuminated arched colonnades of El Parián in Tlaquepaque at dusk create a warmly lit, atmospheric setting perfect for wide-angle architecture photography. Mariachi groups in the courtyard add color and movement.

Photo tip: Use a tripod after sunset to capture the warm interior lighting contrasted with the cool blue sky. Include the musicians in long-exposure shots.
10

Marietas Islands Hidden Beach Aerial

📸 Midday (for the clearest turquoise water colors)seascape/nature

The circular Hidden Beach inside a collapsed volcanic crater on the Marietas Islands is one of Mexico's most spectacular photography subjects. The enclosed turquoise pool surrounded by volcanic rock walls is breathtaking.

Photo tip: Drone photography is prohibited in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Waterproof cameras or gopro are ideal for swimming through the tunnel to the beach. The only access is via guided boat tours.
