Pena del Aire Trail

The Pena del Aire Trail begins at the entrance to the Pena del Aire nature reserve, reached by private vehicle from Huasca de Ocampo town in about 15 minutes; entry requires payment of the reserve's admission fee but no separate hiking permit. The round trip covers about 3 kilometers with 140 meters of cumulative elevation gain to the lookout, a short and moderate climb typically completed in one to one and a half hours. The path is mostly packed dirt through light woodland for the first stretch, becoming rockier and more open near the lookout itself, where sun exposure increases and shade is minimal. The main landmark is the lookout point above the Barranca del Xuchitl, a deep canyon that gives the reserve its scenic character; this lookout is also the trail's turn-around point, as the path does not continue further into the canyon. There are no water sources or shelters along the route. Because the lookout is fully exposed, conditions there feel notably windier and sunnier than the shaded approach trail.
