Ex-convento de los Santos Reyes

The Ex-convento de los Santos Reyes is a 16th-century Augustinian monastery in the town of Metztitlán, built on a promontory overlooking the surrounding canyon and the wetlands of what is now the Barranca de Metztitlán Biosphere Reserve. Its fortress-like stone church and cloister reflect the defensive architecture common to early colonial monasteries in remote areas, with thick walls, a crenellated roofline, and an atrium cross standing in front of the main facade. Visitors spend 45 to 60 minutes touring the church interior, the cloister, and the atrium, with the convent's elevated position offering views out over the canyon and river below, a rare pairing of colonial architecture with dramatic natural scenery. Morning visits are quietest and give the best light for photographing both the stone facade and the canyon views beyond it. Because the convent sits within the biosphere reserve's boundary, many visitors combine the stop with birdwatching or a guided excursion into the surrounding canyon on the same trip.
