Playa La Ropa, Zihuatanejo

Playa La Ropa curves along the southern shore of Zihuatanejo Bay, a wide crescent of golden sand generally regarded as the area's best swimming beach thanks to its gentle slope and water protected from open-ocean swell by the bay's shape. Palapa restaurants and small boutique hotels line the sand at intervals, most offering beach chairs to customers and serving fresh seafood with tables set directly on the beach. The beach takes its name, meaning 'clothing beach,' from a local legend about a shipwrecked Spanish galleon that scattered silk and fine fabrics along the shore. A visit typically runs 2-4 hours, whether spent swimming, walking the length of the crescent, or settling in at one of the palapa restaurants for a long lunch. Mornings bring the calmest, clearest water for swimming, before any afternoon wind picks up across the bay, while sunset draws visitors to the restaurants at the beach's northern end for views back across the water toward downtown Zihuatanejo. Because it sits a short taxi ride from the town center rather than directly downtown, Playa La Ropa stays less crowded than beaches closer to the pier, giving it a more relaxed, resort-adjacent character even during the winter high season.
