Surfing at Troncones Beach

Troncones is a long-established surf village on the Pacific coast of the La Union municipality in Guerrero, roughly 30km north of Zihuatanejo, with a mix of beach breaks and point breaks spread over several kilometers of shoreline that suit a wide range of surfing abilities. Beginners can find gentler beach-break sections and structured lessons through the village's surf camps, while more experienced surfers head to the faster point breaks nearby; no minimum age applies, though camps generally set a practical starting age of around 6-8 for lessons with a board sized to the child. Board rental is available by the day from several shops in the village, and guided lessons include a board, rash guard, and hands-on coaching on paddling, positioning, and popping up; independent surfers bring their own leash and reef-safe sunscreen. Troncones' surf camps are small, longtime local businesses with instructors who grew up surfing the local breaks, rather than large franchised schools, giving them close familiarity with which sections are working on a given swell and tide. Lessons open with a safety briefing covering rip-current awareness, how to read the break from the beach, and the etiquette of sharing waves with other surfers in the lineup, and instructors stay in the water alongside beginners throughout the session. Swell is consistent through the year, with the biggest waves arriving May to October and appealing to more experienced surfers, while the calmer November-to-April window brings smaller, gentler conditions well suited to first-timers and improving surfers; conditions can vary noticeably between the village's different breaks even on the same day, so checking with a local camp before choosing a spot is worthwhile.
