Kayaking and Birdwatching at Barra de Potosi Lagoon

Laguna de Potosi is a sheltered coastal lagoon and mangrove system at the village of Barra de Potosi, in the Petatlan municipality of Guerrero, offering calm-water kayaking either as a self-guided rental or a guide-led birdwatching outing arranged through the local fishing cooperative. No paddling experience is required for the flat, protected lagoon water, and the outing suits beginners, families, and children old enough to sit in a kayak with a properly fitted life jacket; there is no strict minimum age, though very young children usually paddle as passengers with an adult. Kayak, paddle, and life jacket are provided with the rental or guided trip, and visitors bring sun protection and insect repellent, since the mangrove channels can have mosquitoes, especially near dawn and dusk. The kayak and boat rental operation is run by the local Barra de Potosi fishing cooperative, whose members know the lagoon's channels, sandbar, and resident and migratory bird populations from years of working the water; guided birdwatching trips point out herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills, and other wading birds common in the mangroves. Guides give a brief paddling and safety introduction before setting out, covering basic strokes and what to do if a kayak tips in the shallow water, and self-paddled rentals are limited to the marked lagoon area rather than the open ocean inlet. Conditions are calmest from November to April, when the lagoon sees less rain-driven runoff and clearer water, making it the preferred season for both paddling and birdwatching; the wetter months from June to October can bring higher water and more mosquitoes in the mangrove channels.
