Cañada de la Virgen Archaeological Trail

Access to Cañada de la Virgen is controlled through a visitor centre reached by car about 25 minutes from downtown San Miguel de Allende; site admission includes a mandatory shuttle van that carries visitors from the centre's parking area to the trailhead itself, and independent access without the shuttle is not permitted. From the shuttle drop-off, the walking trail to the pyramid complex covers about 2km round trip with 1.5-2 hours needed to include time at the site, mostly flat with only a short, gentle climb up to the main pyramid platform. The surface is a maintained dirt and gravel path through desert scrub, technically easy but with little shade, so exposure is significant during midday hours. The main landmark is the Late Classic-period Otomí-Toltec pyramid complex itself, aligned to solar and lunar events and set on a bluff overlooking the Río Laja valley; guided groups typically stop at several marked platforms and the main pyramid before returning to the shuttle pickup point, which also serves as the natural turn-around point since the trail is a there-and-back route within the controlled site. There are no water sources or shelters along the trail; the visitor centre has restrooms, a small museum, and a shaded palapa area. Visits are typically conducted in timed groups with a site guide, and the last shuttle departs in the mid-afternoon, so arriving well before closing is important.
