Mineral de Pozos

Mineral de Pozos lies about 115 km northeast of Guanajuato City via Dolores Hidalgo and San Luis de la Paz, roughly a 2-hour drive on Highway 110 and local roads, or about 45-60 minutes from San Miguel de Allende, which makes the closer town a more efficient starting point for many visitors. Travellers without a car can take a Flecha Amarilla second-class bus to San Luis de la Paz and continue by local taxi, though a private driver or organized ghost-town tour is more practical given the limited public transport into Mineral de Pozos itself. A mid-morning arrival, once the desert heat has not yet peaked, suits exploring the crumbling stone ruins of the former silver mines such as Cinco Señores and Santa Brígida, scattered on the town's outskirts amid scrubland and cactus. The empty cobblestone streets and abandoned haciendas at the center of town give Mineral de Pozos its genuine ghost-town atmosphere, in contrast with a small but growing revival of art studios, pottery workshops, and cafes run by artists who have settled in the Pueblo Mágico. Midday is a good time for a simple lunch at one of the town's small restaurants near the main plaza before continuing to explore the mine ruins or a nearby ostrich farm, one of the area's unusual attractions. Because the town sits on the high desert plain, October through April offers the coolest and most comfortable conditions for walking among the ruins; summer afternoons can be intensely hot with little shade. The mine ruins have uneven terrain and no formal safety barriers in places, so sturdy footwear and caution are advisable, and visitors should plan to leave before dark since the roads back to San Luis de la Paz and San Miguel de Allende are unlit.
