Late morning or midday is a good time to walk the Zona Centro around the Plaza Principal and the twin-towered Basílica Catedral de León, then continue to the modern Poliforum León and adjoining Explanada cultural complex, a striking contemporary architecture and events space quite different from Guanajuato City's colonial lanes. Lunch options range from taquerias in the Zona Centro to sit-down restaurants near the Explanada serving regional Bajío dishes. In the afternoon, travellers with more time can visit the Museo de Arte e Historia de Guanajuato branch or the Explora science museum and planetarium, both popular with families. León hosts major leather and footwear trade fairs in January and July, when hotel and workshop prices can rise and crowds increase in the Zona Piel, but the city is a viable day trip year-round given its modern infrastructure and mild high-altitude climate.
