Ex-Hacienda de Nogueras (Museo Universitario Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo)

Ex-Hacienda de Nogueras began as a colonial-era agricultural estate in the Comala municipality and was rebuilt in its current form during the early 20th century, after which it became the residence of Colima-born artist and designer Alejandro Rangel Hidalgo from the 1940s onward. The hacienda's whitewashed walls, red-tile roofs, and interior courtyards represent the vernacular Comala architectural style, built around a working estate that once processed coffee and sugarcane from the surrounding Nevado de Colima foothills. Rangel Hidalgo restored and lived in the main house, filling it with his own artwork, colonial-era religious pieces, and pre-Hispanic ceramics from the Colima shaft-tomb tradition, effectively turning the residence into a curated collection before it was formally converted into a university museum after his death in 1998. The estate's chapel, stables, and former processing buildings remain part of the grounds, giving visitors a sense of the working hacienda alongside the artist's living quarters. Restoration work by the University of Colima has preserved the original tile floors, wood beam ceilings, and courtyard gardens, keeping the property close to its mid-20th-century state rather than converting it into a purely modern gallery space. The surrounding gardens, planted with regional flora, are maintained as part of the visitor route and reflect Rangel Hidalgo's interest in Comala's landscape and light.
