Palacio de Gobierno de Colima

The Palacio de Gobierno de Colima is the seat of the state government, a 19th-century building facing the Jardín Libertad whose main public draw is the mural cycle by Jorge Chávez Carrillo covering the central courtyard's stairwell and upper walls. The murals depict episodes from Colima's and Mexico's history, including the arrival of Miguel Hidalgo, painted in a dramatic, colorful style typical of Mexican public muralism. Visitors enter the courtyard freely to view the murals from ground level and from the surrounding upper corridors, which offer closer views of the stairwell panels. A visit runs 30 to 45 minutes, enough to walk the courtyard and take in the mural sequence from multiple angles. The building remains an active government office, so some areas are restricted, but the courtyard and murals are consistently open to the public during daytime hours. Midday light through the open courtyard roof gives the most even illumination for viewing and photographing the murals; the building sees a steady trickle of visitors rather than heavy crowds, since it is often visited in combination with the adjacent cathedral and plaza.
