Coahuila de Zaragoza is Mexico's third-largest state, a vast stretch of northern desert and mountain along the Rio Grande border with Texas. It blends colonial wine country in Parras de la Fuente, the turquoise pools and unique desert ecosystem of Cuatro Ciénegas, the cool pine forests of Arteaga, and the industrial and cultural cities of Saltillo and Torreón.

Saltillo, the state capital, sits at roughly 1,600m and has a mild, semi-arid climate with hot but not extreme summer days, cool nights year-round, and genuinely cold winter nights that can dip near or below freezing. Torreón and the Comarca Lagunera lowlands sit lower and hotter, with summer highs frequently topping 35°C/95°F. The Sierra de Arteaga mountains just south of Saltillo are noticeably cooler than the desert floor and see occasional winter frost and light snow. The Cuatro Ciénegas basin is hot desert year-round with very low humidity. Rain is concentrated in a short summer season (June-September), with the rest of the year largely dry and sunny.

Warming and dry, with pleasant days in Saltillo (18-27°C) and still-cool nights. Torreón and the desert lowlands warm faster and can turn hot by May.
Summer
Months: Jun-Sep
Hot in Torreón and the desert lowlands (frequently 35°C+/95°F+ in July-August), while Saltillo stays somewhat milder thanks to its elevation. The June-September rainy season brings regular afternoon thunderstorms, heaviest in July and August.
Fall

One of the best times to visit: rains taper off, skies clear, and temperatures moderate across the state (15-25°C in Saltillo). Arteaga's forests show autumn color and apple-harvest season is in full swing.
