Las Playitas Turquoise Lagoon

Las Playitas is the largest of the spring-fed lagoons within the Cuatrocienegas Natural Protected Area in Coahuila, Mexico, and its appeal for photography is the contrast between the turquoise water and the surrounding white gypsum sand, which reads as a near-tropical scene in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert. The strongest compositions use the wide sand shoreline as foreground leading toward the water, with the low desert mountains on the horizon as background. Golden hour, shortly after sunrise or before sunset, warms the white sand to a soft gold while the water keeps its turquoise saturation, producing the strongest color contrast; midday sun bleaches the sand and washes out the color difference. The clearest, haze-free light runs from October through April. Because the lagoon shoreline is more open than Poza Azul's boardwalk, it draws larger weekend crowds, and finding an unobstructed foreground along the sand is easier on weekday mornings. Wading is permitted in marked shallow areas but the deeper spring channel is off-limits, tripods are allowed on the open shoreline, drones are not permitted over the reserve's wetlands, and the standard protected-area entrance fee applies.
