Museo del Desierto

Museo del Desierto is a large natural-history museum and paleontology park set in Parque Las Maravillas on the edge of Saltillo, dedicated to the ecosystems and prehistoric life of Mexico's Chihuahuan Desert, one of the most biodiverse arid regions in the Americas. The indoor galleries walk visitors through desert geology, flora and fauna, and a well-regarded dinosaur hall built around fossils recovered in Coahuila, including large sauropod and hadrosaur remains that place the state among Mexico's most important dinosaur fossil sites. Outdoors, a shaded trail winds past life-size dinosaur sculptures set among cactus gardens, giving families a chance to walk the grounds at a relaxed pace after the museum halls. A full visit, covering both the exhibit building and the outdoor trail, runs 2-3 hours; arriving on a weekday morning avoids the school-group crowds that fill the galleries by early afternoon, and finishing the outdoor dinosaur trail before midday sidesteps the harshest desert sun. The plaza near the entrance and the elevated walkways along the dinosaur trail offer good vantage points for photographing the life-size figures against the surrounding desert landscape. Weekends and Mexican school holidays bring the heaviest crowds, particularly with local families.
