Lago Arareko and Cerro El Gallego Loop

The loop around Lago Arareko with a spur to Cerro El Gallego starts near the lake, about 6 kilometres from Creel along the Carretera Creel-Cusarare, reached by taxi, rented bike, or combi. The 7-kilometre route circles the lake on a mostly level lakeside path before climbing a spur of about 150 metres to the Cerro El Gallego viewpoint, a rock outcrop overlooking both the lake and the surrounding pine forest. The lakeside sections follow packed dirt and gravel paths with good shade from surrounding pines, while the spur to the viewpoint is steeper, with some rock scrambling near the top. Landmarks include several small coves and fishing spots around the lake, the base of the Cerro El Gallego spur roughly two-thirds of the way around, and the summit viewpoint itself, which offers the best overall view of Lago Arareko and is the recommended highlight of the loop. There are no shelters directly on the route, though small stands near the lake occasionally sell food and drinks. No potable water source exists along the trail, so water should be carried from Creel. Because the lakeside portion is flat and well-used while the spur adds a modest climb, the loop suits a range of fitness levels, with the viewpoint climb being the only section requiring sure footing.
