El Fuerte is a colonial river town in Sinaloa, Mexico, serving as the western gateway for many El Chepe (Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico) rail itineraries into Copper Canyon in neighboring Chihuahua state. The Plaza de Armas anchors the historic center, framed by colonial-era buildings, the reconstructed Fuerte de Montesclaros fortress overlooking the Fuerte River, and the Museo El Fuerte (Casa de la Cultura), which covers the town's founding as a 16th-century Spanish garrison and its later role as a river-crossing trade post. A visit takes two to three hours: walking the plaza and surrounding streets, climbing to the fort's river overlook, and touring the museum's exhibits on regional history and Indigenous cultures. Morning visits work well for travelers boarding or arriving on El Chepe, since the town's cooler morning air suits walking before the afternoon heat builds. The plaza is liveliest in the early evening, when local families gather and market stalls set up nearby, while daytime hours are generally quiet outside train arrival times.
