Chihuahua al Pacifico (El Chepe) Scenic Train Journey

The Chihuahua al Pacifico railway, known as El Chepe, is a scenic rail journey rather than a physical adventure activity, crossing from Chihuahua City through the Sierra Tarahumara and the Copper Canyon system to Los Mochis on the Sinaloa coast. The activity type is sightseeing by train, with no fitness prerequisites or age limits, making it suitable for travellers of any age, including families and travellers with limited mobility who can access boarding platforms. Two service classes operate the route: Chepe Express, a tourist-oriented service with panoramic windows, dining and bar cars running between Chihuahua City, Creel, Divisadero and Los Mochis, and Chepe Regional, a slower, more affordable service used by both visitors and local residents that stops at more small stations along the line. Equipment needed is minimal: a printed or digital ticket, layered clothing to handle the shift from cool high-sierra air near Divisadero and Creel to the warmer coastal lowlands near Los Mochis, and snacks or water for the longer regional segments where dining service is limited. The railway is operated by Ferrocarril Chihuahua Pacifico, a long-established operator with decades of experience running this specific route through mountainous terrain, and trains carry onboard staff for passenger safety and assistance. Safety briefings are minimal given the nature of the activity, though staff monitor platforms at station stops, particularly at Divisadero, where the train pauses for around 15 minutes at the canyon-rim viewpoint. The journey runs year-round with two daily departures in each direction, and while there is no strict best season, autumn through spring offers the clearest long-distance canyon views, since summer's rainy season (June to September) can bring cloud cover over the deepest canyon sections.
