Zinacantan Household Tortilla and Pox Visit

Zinacantan, a Tzotzil Maya town roughly 11 kilometers from San Cristobal de las Casas, is known primarily for its weaving cooperatives, and several of the same households that host weaving demonstrations also include a food component in their visits. The two-to-three hour visit combines a look at backstrap-loom weaving with a demonstration of handmade tortillas, pressed and cooked on a wood-fired comal in the household's kitchen, served with a simple plate of beans and finished with a small pox tasting. The format leans savoury, with the tortillas and beans as the core of the food portion and the pox serving as a short closing taste rather than a full drink service. The MXN 100-200 (about USD 6-12) price covers the household visit and the food demonstration; a customary MXN 20-50 tip is expected on top for the family hosting the demonstration, and transport from San Cristobal de las Casas to Zinacantan is arranged and paid separately. Visits are conducted in Tzotzil and Spanish, often with a bilingual guide translating for outside visitors, and groups are kept small enough to fit inside a household kitchen. The pace is set by the host family rather than a fixed script, and visitors with dietary restrictions should mention them to the guide in advance, since the meal is prepared specifically for the group rather than drawn from a set menu.
