Puerto Madero (Puerto Chiapas)

Puerto Madero is a working beach and fishing town that shares a peninsula with the modern Puerto Chiapas cruise and cargo terminal, giving an unusual view of container cranes and, on cruise days, docked cruise ships visible down the coast from an otherwise ordinary Soconusco fishing beach. The sand is dark and coarse, and the surf runs moderate, direct Pacific swell rather than a sheltered break, so the beach is used more by locals for weekend outings than as a swimming destination for visitors. The malecón is lined with seafood restaurants specialising in the day's catch from the port's fishing fleet, giving the town a distinctly working-harbour rather than resort atmosphere. Puerto Madero is the main departure point on this stretch of coast for sport-fishing charters targeting sailfish, dorado, and marlin, arranged directly with boat captains at the marina for prices that vary by season and boat size. Shade along the beach is limited to what the malecón restaurants provide, and there are no dedicated sun loungers or public restrooms beyond those inside the restaurants. Basic hotels and guesthouses in town offer simple overnight options for those arriving early for a fishing charter or a cruise-ship departure. Puerto Madero has the best transport links of any beach on this part of the coast, sitting on a paved highway a short drive from Tapachula's airport, with regular combi and taxi connections making it an easy stop even for a short visit.
