Mama's Royal Café

Mama's Royal Cafe occupies a walled garden off Calle Hidalgo in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, and has been the town's default breakfast for decades, serving the surfers, artists, gallery owners and long-stay visitors who make up the resident population between Cabo San Lucas and La Paz. The cooking is a straightforward blend of American diner breakfast and Mexican almuerzo, executed generously rather than delicately. Huevos rancheros at roughly $10 come on corn tortillas with a proper cooked salsa and refried beans; the banana French toast at about $9 is the sweet order most associated with the place, thick-cut and griddled; and eggs Benedict near $11 covers the American side. Chilaquiles, machaca with eggs, breakfast burritos and large plates of fresh papaya, mango and melon fill out the menu, and the coffee is strong and refilled without asking. Portions are substantial enough that most tables do not need lunch afterwards. The setting is an informal garden: mismatched painted furniture under trees and shade sails, gravel and tile underfoot, potted plants, dogs at the edges, and a hand-lettered board of specials. Noise is conversational, service is friendly and unhurried, and dress runs to whatever the surf conditions dictated that morning. There is no bar programme beyond fresh juice, licuados, coffee and a Bloody Mary or michelada for those who want one. Reservations are not taken. The one practical consideration is the schedule: service runs 7AM to 2PM daily and stops firmly at two, and the garden fills between 9AM and 11AM in the December to April season, when waits of 20 to 30 minutes are common. Arriving before 8:30AM avoids the queue and gets the best of the morning light in the garden. Prices are in pesos and modest by Todos Santos standards. The garden fills in a predictable pattern, with surfers arriving first thing after the early Pacific session and the wider Todos Santos crowd following through the mid-morning, so the composition of the room changes noticeably across the short service. Groups larger than four should expect to wait for a table during the winter months, when the town's population swells with seasonal residents.
