Bahía Concepción is arguably the most beautiful bay in Baja California Sur, a 50km sheltered Sea of Cortez inlet lined with small beaches separated by rocky points. Playa Santispac is the main camping beach with freshwater hot springs and shallow turquoise water. Playa El Requesón is a dramatic sandy spit connecting a tiny island to the mainland. Bahia Concepcion is a long, narrow arm of the Sea of Cortez running south from Mulege in the northern half of Baja California Sur, sheltered by a mountainous peninsula and lined with a string of small beaches separated by red-rock points. Highway 1 runs along its western shore, dropping to sand level again and again, which makes this the most accessible stretch of wild coast on the peninsula. The water is startlingly warm and clear, shading from pale aquamarine over the sand shallows to deep blue mid-bay, and because the bay is enclosed there is effectively no swell, only wind chop when a northerly blows in winter.
Playa Santispac, about 20 kilometres south of Mulege, is the largest and busiest of the beaches: a wide arc of coarse sand and shell with mangroves at one end, a cluster of long-term campers and RVs through the winter, two simple palapa restaurants, outdoor showers and pit toilets, and kayak rental in season. Small hot springs bubble up along the shoreline rocks at its northern edge and can be felt underfoot at low tide. Playa El Requeson, some 20 kilometres further south, is the most photographed: a narrow sandbar that runs out from the shore to a small rocky island, submerged at high tide and walkable at low, with shallow warm water on both sides. It has no services beyond a few palapas and pit toilets.
Day use is charged at the beaches, typically MXN 50 to 100 per vehicle or person, and beach camping costs roughly MXN 200 to 300 a night for a palapa. The character is road-trip and camper rather than resort: no loungers, no lifeguards, no beach clubs, and no reliable shade beyond the palapas. Both beaches sit directly off Highway 1 with short, rough sand or gravel entrances, and the nearest full services, fuel, groceries, cash and restaurants, are in Mulege or Loreto.
