This UNESCO Magical Town (Pueblo Mágico) 80km north of Los Cabos blends colonial architecture with a thriving arts scene. The historic sugar mill ruins, colorful galleries, boutique hotels, and excellent restaurants make Todos Santos one of Baja's most charming destinations. It is famously (and incorrectly) associated with The Eagles' 'Hotel California.'
Todos Santos sits about 80km north of Cabo San Lucas on the Pacific side of Baja California Sur, an hour's drive up Highway 19 from Los Cabos and about the same south from La Paz. Designated a Pueblo Mágico in 2006, the historic centre occupies a compact grid of a dozen or so blocks on a low bluff above a belt of date and mango orchards, watered by the freshwater spring that made the town a sugar-cane settlement in the nineteenth century.
What visitors walk through is a townscape of low nineteenth- and early twentieth-century brick and adobe buildings in ochre, terracotta and faded rose, most now occupied by galleries, design shops, cafes and small hotels. The core streets are Centenario, Topete, Legaspi and Juárez, and the whole centre can be covered on foot in an hour. Anchoring it are the Misión de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, a modest whitewashed parish church facing a shaded plaza, and the Teatro Márquez de León, a restored 1940s theatre on the plaza's southern side. Scattered through the surrounding blocks are the brick chimneys and roofless walls of the old sugar mills, left standing as ruins between newer buildings. The Hotel California on Juárez trades on a persistent but unfounded association with the Eagles song and remains the town's most photographed facade.
Galleries are the substance of the place: more than twenty of them, weighted toward contemporary Mexican painting, sculpture and photography, most open roughly 10am to 5pm and closed on Sundays and often Mondays. Todos Santos also has an unusually strong restaurant scene for a town of its size, with several kitchens sourcing from the surrounding organic farms.
A half day covers the centre comfortably; a full day allows a gallery circuit plus lunch and a trip down to the coast at Punta Lobos or La Pastora. Mornings are cool and quiet, with galleries opening around ten; the streets are busiest between noon and 3pm when day-trippers arrive by coach from Los Cabos, and empty again by late afternoon. Note that many businesses close entirely during September's low season.

When to visit
Mid-morning from about 10am, when galleries open and before the Los Cabos day-trip coaches arrive around midday, is the most rewarding window; late afternoon is quiet again. November through April is the cool, dry high season, while September sees many businesses closed.
Accessibility
The historic centre is largely flat but paved in cobblestone and uneven concrete, with high kerbs and few dropped crossings, which makes independent wheelchair travel difficult in places. Several galleries and restaurants occupy historic buildings with stepped entrances, though newer venues on Centenario and Topete are generally level. The main plaza and the mission forecourt are step-free.
