Hierve el Agua

Hierve el Agua — literally "the water boils" in Spanish — is a natural geological formation in the Sierra Norte mountains of Oaxaca state, approximately 70 kilometers east of Oaxaca City. The site consists of mineral springs that bubble from the cliff edge at approximately 1,500 meters elevation, depositing calcium carbonate and other minerals over millennia in formations that mimic frozen waterfalls cascading permanently down the cliff face. The larger formation, Cascada Grande, drops approximately 30 meters and extends nearly 90 meters wide, creating an effect of white stone flowing in suspended motion. The Cascada Chica (small cascade) is a more compact formation accessible via a trail from the main viewpoint. At the top of the formations, natural pools filled by the mineral springs offer swimming with a dramatic mountainous backdrop. The smaller of the two main pools sits directly at the cliff edge, creating the visual effect of an infinity pool overhanging the mountain valley below — a striking experience and one of Mexico's most-photographed natural scenes. The mineral content gives the water a milky blue-green tint. The name refers to the bubbling caused by dissolved gases escaping, not heat — the spring water is cool to the touch. The site is managed by the local Zapotec community of San Lorenzo Albarradas, and the access road — approximately 15 kilometers of dirt track from the main highway — is most comfortable in a vehicle with reasonable clearance. Organized day tours from Oaxaca City typically combine Hierve el Agua with the Tule tree and Mitla Mayan ruins on a single circuit.
