Cabo San Lucas El Arco

El Arco de Cabo San Lucas — The Arch — is a dramatic natural rock formation at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez, marking the geographic Land's End of mainland North America. The arch is a sea-eroded granite formation rising approximately 62 meters from the waterline, flanked by jagged rock stacks and smaller islets. The beach directly beneath the arch is divided into two dramatically different environments: Playa del Amor (Lover's Beach) on the calm Sea of Cortez side, sheltered enough for swimming; and Playa del Divorcio (Divorce Beach) on the open Pacific side, where violent surf makes swimming dangerous. Both beaches are accessible only by water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas marina — no land access exists. California sea lions haul out year-round on the rocks immediately surrounding the arch, and they are visible from close range during water taxi and tour boat approaches. Glass-bottom boat tours allow close viewing of the rock formations and sea floor through the hull. Snorkeling at Pelican Rock, adjacent to the arch on the calmer Sea of Cortez side, provides good visibility and tropical fish sightings. Whale watching tours operating December through April observe humpback and gray whales in the waters surrounding the cape, with the arch as a photographic backdrop. The arch is most dramatically lit during early morning and in the hour before sunset; morning tours on calm days provide the most photogenic conditions before afternoon Pacific swells increase.
