Underground chambered burial complex carved from limestone about 5,000 years ago, the only known prehistoric underground temple, on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is a UNESCO World Heritage site in Paola (Raħal Ġdid) on Triq ic-Cimiterju, in the south-east of Malta. It is an underground complex of chambers carved from limestone about 5,000 years ago, used first as a sanctuary and later as a burial place, and it is regarded as the only known prehistoric underground temple. The site spreads over three levels, with rooms linked by passages and stairs. Features that visitors see include carved ceilings, doorways imitating the post-and-lintel structures of surface temples, and traces of red ochre decoration. One chamber, known as the Oracle Room, is reputed to have remarkable acoustics. Because the interior is fragile, Heritage Malta strictly limits access: only 10 people are admitted at a time, tours are guided and timed, and photography is not allowed. Children under 6 are not admitted, and flat closed shoes are required. Visitors should arrive 15 minutes before the tour, and the visit itself lasts about an hour. The interior is climate-controlled, so seasons make little difference to the experience. Adult tickets cost EUR 35, with concessions at EUR 20 and EUR 15 for ages 6 to 11. Regular tickets sell out weeks ahead through booking.heritagemalta.org, so planning ahead is essential; last-minute tickets go on sale one day before the visit at EUR 50 and are first come, first served. The site is about two minutes on foot from the nearest bus stop from Valletta. Many visitors combine it with the Hal Tarxien Temples, which are roughly 10 minutes' walk away, and Hypogeum ticket holders are reported to receive a discount on Tarxien entry. Crowding is not an issue inside because of the group limit, but booking availability is.
