The National Museum, or Muzium Negara, stands on Jalan Damansara beside the Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and is the country's principal museum of national history and culture.

The Minangkabau-style roof and two huge mosaic murals depict Malaysia's history; galleries cover prehistory to independence.

The National Museum, or Muzium Negara, stands on Jalan Damansara beside the Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and is the country's principal museum of national history and culture. It opened in 1963, a few years after independence, on the site of an earlier museum that had been damaged during the Second World War, and its design by the architect Ho Kok Hoe deliberately draws on traditional Malay architecture, with a large Minangkabau-style roof with upswept ends and a modern concrete frame. The most striking features at the entrance are two large Italian glass mosaic murals that depict episodes from Malaysian history, from the early kingdoms to the colonial period and independence, and a courtyard displaying vintage locomotives and vehicles from the colonial era. Inside, the permanent galleries are arranged largely chronologically, beginning with prehistory, with the story of early human settlement and archaeological finds, then covering the early Malay kingdoms and the trading centre of Melaka, followed by the colonial period, the Second World War, the Malayan Emergency and the road to independence in 1957. Displays include weapons, textiles, ceramics, coins, royal regalia, traditional crafts and dioramas, and the museum also has a section on the cultures of the different ethnic groups of the country. The building has been refurbished at several points, with galleries updated and the exhibition text revised, and it remains a government museum under the national heritage authority. Admission for foreign adults is modest, typically in the range of a few ringgit, and it is easy to reach from the nearby KL Sentral area and the Lake Gardens. A visit gives a coherent overview of the national story before exploring individual sites such as Merdeka Square, the National Mosque and the National Monument. Some exhibits are dated in style, but the architecture, the murals and the sweep of the collection make it a worthwhile stop for visitors who want an introduction to Malaysian history in a single building.
