87 Chinese miners establish a settlement at the confluence of the Gombak and Klang Rivers to work tin deposits.

Civil war between Malay chiefs draws in the Chinese mining factions. Yap Ah Loy, a Hakka leader, becomes Kapitan Cina (Chinese headman) and rebuilds KL from ashes three times. Considered by many the true founder of modern KL.

The Pangkor Treaty brings British Residents to the Malay States. Frank Swettenham is posted to Selangor and begins transforming the chaotic mining town.

Kuala Lumpur replaces Klang as the capital of Selangor state. Frank Swettenham orders the construction of brick and tile buildings to replace KL's fire-prone wooden shanties.

Most of KL burns down in a fire. Swettenham uses the disaster as an opportunity to rebuild with permanent structures.

KL is connected to Port Klang by rail, transforming the tin trade and accelerating growth.

Kuala Lumpur becomes the capital of the newly formed Federated Malay States under British administration.

The magnificent Moorish-colonial Sultan Abdul Samad Building — KL's most iconic colonial structure — is completed, cementing the city's administrative grandeur.

KL's oldest surviving mosque, Masjid Jamek, is built at the river confluence — the exact site of the city's founding.

Japanese forces occupy Malaya during World War II. KL is renamed Syonan (Japanese for 'Light of the South'). The occupation lasts until 1945 and causes significant hardship, particularly for the Chinese community.

The British declare a state of emergency as the Malayan Communist Party launches an armed insurgency. The Emergency lasts until 1960.

Malaysia (then Malaya) declares independence from Britain on 31 August 1957 at Merdeka Square (then the Padang). The Union Jack is lowered and the new Malayan flag raised at midnight.

Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo (Sabah), and Sarawak merge to form Malaysia. Singapore is later expelled in 1965. KL becomes capital of Malaysia.

Serious intercommunal violence between Chinese and Malay communities following elections results in hundreds of deaths. A national trauma that shapes subsequent Malaysian race relations and affirmative action policies.

Kuala Lumpur is ceded to the federal government by Selangor and becomes a Federal Territory, no longer part of any state.
