The Vilnius TV Tower at Sausio 13-osios g. 10 in the Karoliniškės district of Vilnius, Lithuania, is the tallest structure in the country at about 326 metres. Completed in 1980, it is also a memorial site, because on 13 January 1991 Soviet forces attacked the tower and people died defending it during Lithuania's independence struggle; a memorial and commemorative plaques stand at its base. The frame photographers use is twofold. From the ground, the slender concrete shaft rises above wooded hills, and from a distance the tower is a dramatic vertical against the sky, particularly at blue hour when the lights and glowing sky combine. From the observation deck, at about 165 metres, a ticketed visit gives a panorama of the city and the Neris valley, and a restaurant on the upper floors offers views through glass, though reflections limit photography. The tower is west of the Old Town, so the sunset sky sits behind it from many viewpoints, and blue hour in winter and early spring gives clear, cool skies. Fog and low cloud sometimes hide the upper tower, which creates an atmospheric image from below. The base and surrounding park are free to enter and usually quiet, so tripod space is easy, and long exposures work well. Observation deck tickets carry a fee, and opening hours vary, so they should be checked beforehand. Drones are restricted near the tower, a sensitive broadcast and memorial site, under Lithuanian regulations. The tower is reached by bus or taxi from the centre, and the nearby facilities and cafes provide restrooms and water. Respect for the memorial is expected, and loud behaviour or climbing on memorial structures should be avoided.
