Lesotho Weather & Climate Guide 2026

Month-by-month weather, best times to visit, and what to pack for Lesotho.

Lesotho, the 'Kingdom in the Sky', is a mountainous enclave entirely surrounded by South Africa. This unique nation offers dramatic highland scenery, rich Basotho culture, spectacular waterfalls including the 192-meter Maletsunyane Falls, and adventure activities from pony trekking to the world's highest commercial abseil.

Lesotho has a highland semi-arid climate shaped by its extreme altitude - the entire country sits above 1,000m and much of it above 2,000m, making it one of the highest countries in the world. Maseru (the capital at 1,600m) experiences hot summers with afternoon thunderstorms from November to March, mild dry autumns in April-May, cold winters with highland snowfall from June to August, and pleasant spring conditions in September-October. The highland plateau regions above 3,000m experience dramatically colder conditions year-round, with sub-zero winter nights and snow lasting weeks at Afriski Resort.
