About Kuwait City

Kuwait City, in the Capital Governorate (Al Asimah), sits on the south shore of Kuwait Bay: Qibla and Mubarakiya with the old souq, Seif Palace and the Grand Mosque, Sharq and Dasman with Kuwait Towers, Al Hamra Tower and the Gulf Road waterfront, Shuwaikh with the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre, and residential districts such as Qadsiya, Mirqab, Kaifan, Faiha, Rawda and Adailiya. Salmiya, Failaka Island and Messila lie in other governorates. Kuwait International Airport (KWI) is in Farwaniya, about 16 km from the centre. The city is extremely hot from May to September, so most visitors walk outdoors from November to March and use air-conditioned museums and malls in summer. There is no metro, so visitors use Careem, Uber, licensed taxis and limited buses. Kuwait is a Muslim-majority state where alcohol is banned entirely and modest dress is expected; evenings are for cafes, shisha, restaurants, malls and cinemas. Two days cover the old centre and the Gulf Road; a third adds Al Shaheed Park and the Mirror House. The weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Kuwait Towers

The three slender towers on the Arabian Gulf Street waterfront are the symbol of Kuwait; the main tower, 187 m high, carries a viewing sphere at 123 m that completes a full turn every 30 minutes.

Grand Mosque (Al Masjid Al Kabir)

The largest mosque in Kuwait, set beside Seif Palace near the old city centre; its large main dome and tall minaret mark the skyline, and visitors from other faiths can usually tour outside prayer times.

The national museum on Arabian Gulf Street, with archaeology and heritage collections including finds from Failaka, plus maritime and desert-life displays; parts of the complex were damaged in 1990-91 and sections have reopened over the years.

Sadu House

A traditional courtyard house run by the Al Sadu Society that displays Bedouin weaving (sadu), with a museum, workshop and shop of handwoven textiles; the society has operated here since around 1980.

Dar Al Athar Al Islamiyyah (Amricani Cultural Centre)

The Amricani Cultural Centre, in the restored former American Mission hospital buildings on the Gulf Road, hosts exhibitions of Islamic art and history from the Dar Al Athar Al Islamiyyah foundation, with a museum shop and event programme.

Best time Shoulder Worth avoiding

Average daytime temperature in °C.

Mild, sunny weather from November to March suits walking Mubarakiya, the Gulf Road and Al Shaheed Park; summer is best spent in air-conditioned malls and museums.

Dust storms can reduce visibility from spring to summer, and rare heavy winter rain can flood roads. Ramadan changes opening hours and daytime dining, so check venues if travelling then.

Essential travel tips

  • Dress modestly: cover shoulders and knees in souqs, mosques, museums and malls; swimwear is for hotel pools and beaches.
  • Pay by card in malls and restaurants; carry small KWD notes and coins for souq stalls and taxis.
  • Visit outdoor sights from November to March and schedule museums for the afternoon heat.
  • Friday and Saturday are the weekend; many shops open late on Friday and mosque visits for non-Muslims are limited.
  • Use Careem or Uber after dark; they show the price before you ride.
  • Confirm hours by phone: many museums keep split hours and some have closed sections.

Hidden gems

Off-the-beaten-path corners most travellers miss.
