Ma'an Photography Guide 2025

Capture stunning photos with our guide to the best photography spots in Ma'an.

Ma'an Governorate is Jordan's largest governorate by area, encompassing the legendary rose-red city of Petra, the dramatic desert landscapes of Wadi Rum, and the historic market town of Ma'an city. This southern region is home to some of the ancient world's most extraordinary monuments, carved by the Nabataean civilization over two millennia ago. From rugged desert canyons to Crusader-era castles, Ma'an offers an unparalleled journey through layers of human history set against spectacular natural scenery.

Top 10 Photo Spots

The most photogenic locations in Ma'an.

1

Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) โ€” Siq Exit

๐Ÿ“ธ Sunrise (6:00-8:00 AM)landmark

The world-famous first view of the Treasury as you emerge from the Siq canyon. The narrow Siq frames the 43m faรงade in a natural stone aperture, and the morning light fills the gorge with extraordinary warm tones.

Photo tip: Arrive at Petra opening time (6 AM) to photograph without crowds. By 9 AM the Treasury is packed with tour groups.
2

Khubtha Summit โ€” Treasury from Above

๐Ÿ“ธ Afternoon (2:00-4:00 PM for warm light)landscape

The aerial view looking straight down on the Treasury's urn from the mountaintop above โ€” the most dramatic and unusual Petra perspective. A 45-minute scramble on rock-cut stairs from the Outer Siq.

Photo tip: Bring a telephoto lens (70-200mm) for the best aerial compression. The descent light in late afternoon is warm and golden.
3

The Monastery (Ad-Deir) at Sunset

๐Ÿ“ธ Late afternoon (4:00-6:00 PM)landmark

Petra's largest monument receives the last warm light of the day on its west-facing faรงade, turning deep orange and amber in the final hour before sunset. The viewpoint terrace beyond the Monastery adds mountain panoramas.

Photo tip: The terrace beyond the Monastery (a 5-minute walk past it) offers the best composition including surrounding mountains.
4

Petra by Night โ€” Treasury Candlelight

๐Ÿ“ธ Night (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 8:30-10:30 PM)night

Over 2,000 candles illuminate the Siq and Treasury on three evenings per week, creating an otherworldly scene of flickering light on rose-red stone. Long exposure photography produces magical results.

Photo tip: Use ISO 1600-3200 and a tripod. Shutter speeds of 2-10 seconds produce beautiful candle trails. A gorilla pod is easier to carry through the Siq.
5

Royal Tombs โ€” Eastern Cliff Face

๐Ÿ“ธ Afternoon (1:00-4:00 PM)architecture

The Urn, Silk, Corinthian, and Palace Tombs line the eastern cliff and receive direct sun in the afternoon, illuminating their multicoloured sandstone faรงades. From the upper terrace, the whole series can be captured in a single wide frame.

Photo tip: The Silk Tomb's multicoloured swirling stone is best photographed in bright afternoon light. A polarising filter reduces reflections.
6

The Siq โ€” Light Rays Morning

๐Ÿ“ธ Morning (7:00-9:00 AM)landscape

The 1.2km canyon of the Siq catches shafts of morning sunlight filtering between the 80m walls, creating dramatic light rays through swirling dust. The Nabataean water channels and carved niches are visible in this light.

Photo tip: Stop frequently in the Siq and look back toward the entrance โ€” the compositions of light and rock are constantly changing.
7

Dana Biosphere Reserve โ€” Canyon Panorama

๐Ÿ“ธ Sunrise (6:30-8:00 AM)landscape

The canyon viewpoint from Dana village offers one of Jordan's finest panoramic landscapes โ€” the broad sweep of Wadi Dana cutting through stacked sandstone plateaus, descending to the distant Wadi Araba desert floor.

Photo tip: The Treeclimbers Cafรฉ terrace is the best vantage point. Stay overnight at Dana Guesthouse to catch sunrise from above.
8

Shoubak Castle โ€” Hilltop at Golden Hour

๐Ÿ“ธ Sunset (30 min before and after)landscape

The conical hill topped by Shoubak Castle is silhouetted dramatically against sunset skies, with the surrounding pine forests of northern Ma'an providing deep green framing. The view from the castle walls is equally spectacular.

Photo tip: The best exterior photograph of the castle is from the road about 500m before the entrance, capturing the full hill in profile.
9

Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) โ€” Painted House

๐Ÿ“ธ Midday (11:00 AM-1:00 PM)architecture

The interior of the Painted House in Little Petra contains the only surviving Nabataean frescoes in the region โ€” vine motifs and figures on the ceiling. The narrow gorge outside provides dramatic carved faรงade photography.

Photo tip: Use a wide-angle lens for the gorge faรงades. For the Painted House interior, a high ISO and steady hands are needed โ€” no tripods allowed.
10

High Place of Sacrifice โ€” Petra Panorama

๐Ÿ“ธ Morning (8:00-11:00 AM)landscape

The Nabataean sacrificial altar atop Zibb Atuf mountain provides one of the most expansive views in all of Petra โ€” looking out across the entire basin, the Colonnaded Street, and the distant sandstone mountains.

Photo tip: Visit in late winter/early spring when the surrounding hills are briefly green after rain โ€” an extraordinary contrast with the red rock.

Photography Tips

Get better shots in Ma'an.

๐Ÿ“ธ

Arrive at Petra at opening time (6 AM) โ€” the early morning light and absence of crowds make the first 2-3 hours the best for photography

๐Ÿ“ธ

A wide-angle lens (16-35mm equivalent) is essential for the Siq and indoor spaces; a telephoto (70-200mm) for Khubtha summit aerial views

๐Ÿ“ธ

Dust in the Siq can create beautiful light rays but also damages cameras โ€” keep your gear covered when not shooting

๐Ÿ“ธ

Petra by Night is tripod-friendly in the Siq but the Treasury square is crowded โ€” a small tabletop tripod or gorilla pod is more practical

๐Ÿ“ธ

Drone photography inside Petra requires a permit from the Jordan Tourism Board โ€” apply in advance

๐Ÿ“ธ

The Treasury's colour changes dramatically from orange-pink at sunrise to deep red at midday to amber at sunset โ€” visit at different times

๐Ÿ“ธ

In Dana Reserve, a 300-400mm lens is ideal for bird photography โ€” Egyptian vultures, Bonelli's eagles, and Sinai rosefinches are common
