Ma'an Photography Guide 2025
Capture stunning photos with our guide to the best photography spots in Ma'an.
Ma'an Governorate is Jordan's largest governorate by area, encompassing the legendary rose-red city of Petra, the dramatic desert landscapes of Wadi Rum, and the historic market town of Ma'an city. This southern region is home to some of the ancient world's most extraordinary monuments, carved by the Nabataean civilization over two millennia ago. From rugged desert canyons to Crusader-era castles, Ma'an offers an unparalleled journey through layers of human history set against spectacular natural scenery.
Top 10 Photo Spots
The most photogenic locations in Ma'an.
Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) โ Siq Exit
The world-famous first view of the Treasury as you emerge from the Siq canyon. The narrow Siq frames the 43m faรงade in a natural stone aperture, and the morning light fills the gorge with extraordinary warm tones.
Khubtha Summit โ Treasury from Above
The aerial view looking straight down on the Treasury's urn from the mountaintop above โ the most dramatic and unusual Petra perspective. A 45-minute scramble on rock-cut stairs from the Outer Siq.
The Monastery (Ad-Deir) at Sunset
Petra's largest monument receives the last warm light of the day on its west-facing faรงade, turning deep orange and amber in the final hour before sunset. The viewpoint terrace beyond the Monastery adds mountain panoramas.
Petra by Night โ Treasury Candlelight
Over 2,000 candles illuminate the Siq and Treasury on three evenings per week, creating an otherworldly scene of flickering light on rose-red stone. Long exposure photography produces magical results.
Royal Tombs โ Eastern Cliff Face
The Urn, Silk, Corinthian, and Palace Tombs line the eastern cliff and receive direct sun in the afternoon, illuminating their multicoloured sandstone faรงades. From the upper terrace, the whole series can be captured in a single wide frame.
The Siq โ Light Rays Morning
The 1.2km canyon of the Siq catches shafts of morning sunlight filtering between the 80m walls, creating dramatic light rays through swirling dust. The Nabataean water channels and carved niches are visible in this light.
Dana Biosphere Reserve โ Canyon Panorama
The canyon viewpoint from Dana village offers one of Jordan's finest panoramic landscapes โ the broad sweep of Wadi Dana cutting through stacked sandstone plateaus, descending to the distant Wadi Araba desert floor.
Shoubak Castle โ Hilltop at Golden Hour
The conical hill topped by Shoubak Castle is silhouetted dramatically against sunset skies, with the surrounding pine forests of northern Ma'an providing deep green framing. The view from the castle walls is equally spectacular.
Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) โ Painted House
The interior of the Painted House in Little Petra contains the only surviving Nabataean frescoes in the region โ vine motifs and figures on the ceiling. The narrow gorge outside provides dramatic carved faรงade photography.
High Place of Sacrifice โ Petra Panorama
The Nabataean sacrificial altar atop Zibb Atuf mountain provides one of the most expansive views in all of Petra โ looking out across the entire basin, the Colonnaded Street, and the distant sandstone mountains.

Photography Tips
Get better shots in Ma'an.
Arrive at Petra at opening time (6 AM) โ the early morning light and absence of crowds make the first 2-3 hours the best for photography
A wide-angle lens (16-35mm equivalent) is essential for the Siq and indoor spaces; a telephoto (70-200mm) for Khubtha summit aerial views
Dust in the Siq can create beautiful light rays but also damages cameras โ keep your gear covered when not shooting
Petra by Night is tripod-friendly in the Siq but the Treasury square is crowded โ a small tabletop tripod or gorilla pod is more practical
Drone photography inside Petra requires a permit from the Jordan Tourism Board โ apply in advance
The Treasury's colour changes dramatically from orange-pink at sunrise to deep red at midday to amber at sunset โ visit at different times
In Dana Reserve, a 300-400mm lens is ideal for bird photography โ Egyptian vultures, Bonelli's eagles, and Sinai rosefinches are common
Photography Etiquette
Respect local customs while capturing memories.
Always ask permission before photographing people, especially women. Offer to show them the photo.
Never photograph military installations, government buildings, airports, or security checkpoints.
Some religious sites prohibit photography or require fees. Always check before shooting.
Be discrete with expensive camera gear in crowded areas. Don't obstruct traffic or pathways for photos.
