Parangtritis Beach (Pantai Parangtritis)
Yogyakarta's most famous and most visited beach, Parangtritis stretches along a wild Indian Ocean coast with dark volcanic sand, dramatic cliffs, and powerful surf. The beach is deeply embedded in Javanese mythology as the domain of Nyai Roro Kidul (Queen of the South Sea). Sunset views are spectacular but swimming is extremely dangerous.
Indrayanti Beach (Pantai Indrayanti)
A stunning crescent-shaped beach flanked by limestone cliffs with powdery white sand and turquoise water, Indrayanti is Gunungkidul's most photogenic beach. Named after the owner of the first café built here, the beach has numerous beachside restaurants serving fresh seafood and is calmer than the exposed surf beaches.
Baron Beach (Pantai Baron)
A sheltered bay where a small freshwater river meets the Indian Ocean, creating a natural pool area safer for wading than open sea beaches. Baron has a fishing village, a lighthouse viewpoint, and good seafood warungs. One of the better beaches for families with young children.
Timang Beach (Pantai Timang)
One of Yogyakarta's most dramatic landscapes—a rocky promontory separated from the mainland by a churning ocean channel. Visitors can cross via traditional wooden gondola or a newer cable car. The lobster-farming community here sells fresh lobster at excellent prices. The scenery is raw and spectacular.
Wediombo Beach (Pantai Wediombo)
A beautiful, relatively remote beach with a natural rock pool (lagoon) on the eastern edge that is calm enough for swimming when seas are not rough. Wediombo is less developed than Indrayanti and attracts visitors seeking a more pristine beach experience. The surrounding cliffs and rock formations are stunning.
Krakal Beach (Pantai Krakal)
A wide, white-sand beach with relatively few visitors and a serene atmosphere. Krakal is known for its cleaner waters than some more popular Gunungkidul beaches and its excellent coral reef for snorkeling during calm conditions. Part of a string of accessible beaches between Baron and Indrayanti.
Sundak Beach (Pantai Sundak)
A relatively quiet beach between Baron and Indrayanti with striking limestone formations and fewer crowds than its more famous neighbors. The name comes from a legendary story of a dog (asu) fighting a porcupine (landak) near the freshwater spring here.
Parangkusumo Beach
Adjacent to Parangtritis but famous for its own identity as a sacred spiritual site and for the Parangkusumo sand dunes that are perfect for sandboarding and ATV riding. The beach is considered one of the most sacred in Javanese cosmology.
