Adjacent to Prambanan, the Sewu temple compound is a magnificent 8th-century Buddhist temple complex—the second largest in Indonesia—featuring a central Buddhist sanctuary surrounded by 249 perwara (guardian) temples. Sewu predates Prambanan and has a more peaceful atmosphere with fewer crowds.
