Ásbyrgi Canyon

Ásbyrgi is a horseshoe-shaped canyon in northeast Iceland, part of Vatnajökull National Park, stretching about 3.5 kilometers long and up to a kilometer wide, with sheer cliff walls rising roughly 100 meters. Geologists attribute its formation to catastrophic glacial flood events thousands of years ago, though local folklore instead credits the hoofprint of Sleipnir, Odin's eight-legged horse from Norse mythology. A rock formation called Eyjan (the Island) stands in the center of the canyon, splitting it into two arms, and a marked trail climbs to a viewpoint atop Eyjan for a view down the length of both branches. The canyon floor holds a small pond, Botnstjörn, ringed by birch and willow woodland that is noticeably lusher and more sheltered from wind than the surrounding treeless terrain, making it several degrees warmer on blustery days. A campground within the canyon makes it a popular overnight stop for those touring the Diamond Circle route, which also includes Dettifoss and Húsavík. A relaxed loop covering Botnstjörn and the Eyjan viewpoint takes about two to three hours; a shorter walk to the pond alone takes under an hour.
