Day trip tips
Make the most of your excursions.
Book InterCity (IC) train tickets in advance on www.mavcsoport.hu for 20-30% discounts—seat reservation required on IC trains
The Danube Bend (Szentendre + Visegrad + Esztergom) can be done as a single loop by combining HEV train outbound and river ferry return (seasonal)
Start Eger day trips early (first train from Keleti is around 7 AM)—the town is compact and you need the afternoon for wine cellar visits
Lake Balaton is vast—focus on either the north shore (Tihany, Balatonfüred) for culture, or south shore (Siófok, Zamárdi) for beach. Don't try to do both in one day.
The Tokaj wine train runs seasonally (summer) as a special tourist service from Budapest—check Magyar Turizmus timetables for availability
