Climate Overview

Guinea Bissau has a tropical savanna climate with two distinct seasons: a dry season from November to May dominated by the hot, dusty Harmattan wind blowing from the Sahara, and a rainy season from June to October when the southwest monsoon brings heavy downpours. Temperatures remain warm year-round, ranging from 24°C at night to 35-40°C at the peak of the dry season. Coastal and island areas benefit from Atlantic breezes that moderate the heat significantly, while the interior experiences more extreme temperatures.

Seasonal Breakdown

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

Mar-May

Late dry season transitioning to rains. March and April are the hottest months with temperatures reaching 38-40°C. Low humidity and strong sunshine. Some years see early rain showers in May.

Tips: Bring lightweight, breathable clothing and strong sun protection. Hydration essential. Wildlife gathers at remaining water sources making sightings excellent.

☀️ Summer

Jun-Aug

Peak rainy season with daily afternoon and evening downpours. Humidity very high, roads deteriorate, boat crossings can be rough or cancelled. Green and lush but challenging for travel, especially to islands and rural areas.

Tips: Pack waterproof jacket and bag covers. Expect delays and disruptions. Sea turtle nesting begins on Poilao Island. Malaria risk highest - be vigilant.

🍂 Fall

Sep-Nov

Transitional period as rains taper off from October. Vegetation intensely green, rivers full, bird migration peaks in November. October-November increasingly popular as the landscape is beautiful and crowds are minimal.

Tips: Check road and sea conditions before travel in September-October. November excellent for birdwatching. Accommodation booking eases as peak season has not started.

❄️ Winter

Dec-Feb

Peak dry season with the Harmattan wind bringing hazy skies but comfortable temperatures of 22-30°C. Best period for all outdoor activities including wildlife, beaches, and national parks. Calm seas for island crossings.

Tips: Book accommodation in advance as this is high season. Harmattan haze can reduce visibility for photography - early morning is clearest. Carry lip balm as the dry Harmattan wind is dehydrating.
