Bairaktaris has held its corner position at Monastiraki Square since 1879, making it not merely one of Athens' oldest souvlaki houses but one of the longest-running restaurants in all of Greece. The original operation served the traders and workers of the Monastiraki bazaar; today it feeds a mixture of tourists drawn by the obvious square-facing location and Athenians who genuinely rate the souvlaki. The kitchen handles volume with practiced confidence: gyro turns on a vertical spit, pork souvlaki skewers rotate over gas flames, and the service line moves efficiently even during the busiest periods. Souvlaki platters arrive with generous portions of French fries dusted with paprika, raw onion, and fresh bread. The gyro wrap—pork or chicken in pita with tzatziki, tomato, and onion—is assembled in seconds. Outdoor seating on the pedestrianized square provides what may be the best people-watching position in Athens, with views across to the Monastiraki Flea Market, the ruins of Hadrian's Library, and the Acropolis rising behind. The value proposition is strong: a full souvlaki platter costs around €9. Bairaktaris is not the most refined souvlaki in Monastiraki, but for the combination of history, location, outdoor seating, and honest food at honest prices, it remains a benchmark against which other Athenian souvlaki operations are informally measured.
