North Aegean Weather & Climate Guide 2026

When to visit North Aegean: real monthly data on temperature, rain, and crowds — not vibes.

The North Aegean is Greece's most authentically Greek island region, a scattered archipelago of forested mountains, medieval stone villages, Byzantine monasteries, and crystalline bays stretching along Turkey's western coast. Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria, and Lemnos each carry distinct identities shaped by centuries of Greek, Byzantine, Ottoman, and ancient civilisation.

The North Aegean enjoys a classic eastern Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Islands closest to the Turkish coast (Chios, Samos) have slightly warmer and drier summers. Lesbos has a more varied microclimate due to its size — the interior and western coast are greener and more exposed to winter rains. The meltemi (etesian) north wind blows strongly in July and August, refreshing temperatures but occasionally interrupting ferry services. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for outdoor activity.
