Porto Katsiki Beach

Porto Katsiki lies on the southwest coast of Lefkada in the Ionian Islands of Greece and is one of the most dramatic beach settings in the country. The beach sits at the base of near-vertical white chalk cliffs that drop abruptly from a plateau more than 100 metres above, accessed by a staircase of approximately 100 steps carved into the cliff face. The combination of bone-white cliff, vivid blue-green water, and crescent sand makes Porto Katsiki one of the most frequently reproduced images of the Greek islands.

The beach itself is mixed sand and small pebbles, with a broad flat section suitable for sunbathing and a gently shelving entry into the water. The sea is generally calm in the morning and develops light surf by afternoon. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available from a seasonal operator, and a small beach café offers cold drinks and snacks. The staircase descent takes around five minutes one way; the return climb is steeper than it initially appears.

The clifftop area is reached by road from Athani village, roughly 5 kilometres inland. Car parking is available near the staircase entrance, though the lot fills quickly from 10 AM onward throughout summer. Arriving before 9 AM keeps parking straightforward and leaves the beach largely empty. Alternative access is by sea: boat taxis from Vasiliki in the south and Nidri on the east coast make stops at Porto Katsiki during summer, providing a scenic alternative that avoids the staircase entirely.

The clifftop offers exceptional views north along the Lefkada coast toward the neighboring beach of Egremni, also visible from the rim. Photographers favor the clifftop in the morning when the low sun illuminates the chalk face and creates strong contrasts with the turquoise sea below.
