Blue Caves, Zakynthos

The Blue Caves are a series of interconnected sea caves located at Cape Skinari at the northern tip of Zakynthos in the Ionian Islands of Greece. They are accessible exclusively by boat — small wooden vessels departing from the small harbour below the Cape Skinari lighthouse carry passengers through the cave entrances, which are at sea level and vary in width. Inside the largest cave, sunlight filters through the clear water and reflects off the white limestone walls and ceiling, producing an extraordinary all-pervasive electric blue luminescence that extends across both the water surface and the cave interior.

The optical effect occurs because white limestone reflects the color of the water rather than the rock's own color, and the shallow, clear water over a white sandy bottom concentrates and re-emits the aquamarine wavelength. The effect is most intense between approximately 10 AM and noon, when the sun is at an angle that penetrates the cave entrance and illuminates the interior without creating overpowering glare. Early morning trips before 10 AM can offer the cave with fewer other boats but with somewhat softer color.

The boat tour typically includes two or three cave entrances and allows passengers to swim inside the largest cave. The water is exceptionally clear and shallow — ideal for snorkeling — and the pale sandy bottom is visible at several metres depth. The caves are not fully enclosed; most have open roof or side apertures that allow natural light throughout. The tour from Cape Skinari takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes including swimming time. Some longer tours combine the Blue Caves with a transit to Navagio Beach on the island's west coast.

The lighthouse at Cape Skinari is the departure point for most cave tours and can be visited on foot from the adjacent road. The drive from Zakynthos Town to Cape Skinari takes around 45 minutes via the island's northern coast road.
