A perfectly curved omega-shaped bay with golden sand and calm turquoise waters, backed by a pristine lagoon and sand dunes. Often called the most beautiful beach in the Mediterranean.
Voidokilia Beach is an omega-shaped bay of golden sand on the Ionian coast of Messenia in the southwestern Peloponnese, near Pylos in Greece. The name means ox-belly, and the almost perfect semicircle of shoreline encloses calm, shallow turquoise water. Behind the beach, the Gialova Lagoon is a protected wetland and a major stop for migratory birds, including flamingos, herons and egrets, and a boardwalk and dunes separate the lagoon from the sea. The northern end of the bay is dominated by the hill of Paleokastro, a Frankish and Venetian castle also known as Old Navarino, and by the Cave of Nestor, linked in legend to the Homeric king. A steep path climbs from the beach to the castle ruins, taking about 20 minutes, and rewards visitors with views over the bay and the Sfaktiria island. Facilities are minimal because the beach lies within a Natura 2000 protected area, with no sunbeds or organised services, and visitors should bring water, food and shade. A visit usually takes three to four hours, and photographers favour the view from the castle and the dune-edge for the full curve of the bay. The beach is calmest early in the morning, and it gets crowded between midday and late afternoon in July and August. Shallow water makes it suitable for families, though the lagoon-side shore is shallower still, and the sand can be hot. The nearest town for supplies is Pylos, about 10 kilometres away, with Gialova closer to the lagoon. Sunset over the bay is quiet and atmospheric, and swimming is generally safe, though visitors should heed signs about protected nesting areas. Entry is free.
