Navagio Shipwreck Beach

Navagio Beach, also called Shipwreck Beach, is a small cove on the northwest coast of Zakynthos in the Ionian Islands of Greece. It is enclosed by sheer white limestone cliffs rising about two hundred metres, with pale sand and bright turquoise water and the rusted hull of a freighter, the MV Panagiotis, lying on the sand since it ran aground in 1980. The cove can only be reached by boat, since there is no road down the cliffs.

Rusted shipwreck on white sand beach surrounded by towering cliffs. Impossibly turquoise water. Viewpoint from clifftop offers dramatic aerial perspective. Greece's most photographed beach.

Excursions leave from Porto Vromi, Volimes and Agios Nikolaos, and larger tours run from Zakynthos Town and Laganas, usually combining a stop at the beach with the nearby Blue Caves. Boats anchor close to shore and passengers wade or step onto the sand, with time to swim, walk to the wreck and photograph the cliffs. A typical excursion lasts three to four hours, including the boat ride. A second way to see the beach is from the cliff-top viewing platform near the village of Anafonitria and Volimes, where the cove appears from above in the classic postcard shot. The platform is free and reached by car along a rural road. Crowds are heaviest from about 11:00 to 15:00 in July and August, when many boats arrive together; early morning and late afternoon departures are quieter. Rockfalls from the cliffs have caused closures and restrictions on landing at times, so current access rules should be checked locally before booking, and visitors should not linger beneath the cliffs. The sea is generally calm in the cove, but the crossing can be bumpy in strong winds. There are no facilities on the beach, so water, sun protection and a hat are needed. Swimming is popular, though the cove has no lifeguard. Drones are subject to restrictions in Greece, so permits may apply. Photographers favour the view from the cliff platform in the early morning or late afternoon for the best light on the water.
