Meteora is a cluster of towering sandstone pillars rising above the town of Kalambaka and the village of Kastraki in Thessaly, central Greece. Atop the rocks stand Byzantine monasteries, founded from the fourteenth century by monks seeking seclusion. The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, valued for both its architecture and its dramatic landscape. Six monasteries remain active today: the Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Roussanou, Saint Stephen, Holy Trinity and Saint Nicholas Anapausas.

Meteora Monasteries

Six functioning Byzantine monasteries perch impossibly atop towering rock pillars, creating one of the most surreal landscapes in Europe. Monks began settling these natural sandstone pillars in the 14th century.

Visitors reach the monasteries by car, by bus, or on foot along old monks' paths. Each monastery has its own opening days and hours, and one or two are usually closed on any given weekday, so planning is needed to fit several into a day. Entry requires modest dress: women wear skirts, which are often lent at the gate, and men wear long trousers. Inside, visitors see chapels covered in post-Byzantine frescoes, small museums with icons and manuscripts, and old winches and rope nets once used to hoist people and supplies. The Great Meteoron is the largest and highest, with a museum in its former kitchen. Varlaam has a well-preserved wooden winch tower, while Roussanou, reached by a short bridge, is an elegant monastery occupied by nuns. Holy Trinity, used in a James Bond film, requires a long staircase of carved steps, and Saint Stephen is reached across a bridge and is noted for its gardens and calm atmosphere. Viewpoints along the road include the Psaropetra lookout, the Holy Spirit rock and the platform near Roussanou. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to photograph the pillars, with mist often filling the valley in the early morning. Visitors typically need a full day to see two or three monasteries and the viewpoints, and a half day for a shorter tour. Crowds are heaviest from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, especially in summer and on weekends, when parking at the larger monasteries fills quickly. Winter is quiet and sometimes snowy, giving the rocks a different character but making some trails slippery.
