Folegandros Island

Folegandros is a small island in the southwestern Cyclades, between Milos and Santorini, known for its dramatic cliffs, whitewashed villages, and unhurried pace. It measures only about thirty-two square kilometres, and it has remained far quieter than its better-known neighbours. The capital, Chora, perches on a cliff about 200 metres above the sea, and its car-free historic centre has three interconnected squares lined with tavernas, bars and small shops. Chora is the heart of island life.

Unspoiled Cycladic island with dramatic cliffs and pristine beaches

Folegandros is a small island in the southwestern Cyclades, between Milos and Santorini, known for its dramatic cliffs, whitewashed villages, and unhurried pace. It measures only about thirty-two square kilometres, and it has remained far quieter than its better-known neighbours. The capital, Chora, perches on a cliff about 200 metres above the sea, and its car-free historic centre has three interconnected squares lined with tavernas, bars and small shops. Chora is the heart of island life. Visitors walk through narrow lanes with bougainvillea and blue shutters, to the Kastro, a fifteenth-century Venetian-era quarter whose houses are connected into a fortress wall. A zigzag stone path with around 300 steps leads up from Chora to the Church of Panagia, which sits on a hilltop and is the focus of the island's August 15 festival. The church interior is simple, but the views over the Aegean from the terrace are among the best on the island. Beyond Chora, the island offers beaches and walks. Katergo, reached on foot by a trail from Ano Meria or by boat, is a pebble beach in a sheltered cove. Agali and Agios Nikolaos are easier to reach and have tavernas. Ano Meria, the farming village at the island's western end, has a folklore museum and traditional houses, and the road passes terraced fields and stone walls. The island has hiking trails marked for walkers, and a coastal path connects Chora to the villages. Local specialities include matsata pasta and local cheeses, and tavernas serve produce from island farms. Boats connect the island to Piraeus, Milos, Santorini and other Cyclades, but ferry schedules are limited, and the weather can disrupt crossings. The island is busiest in July and August, when accommodation fills quickly and prices rise. Late May, June, and September are warm and quieter, with calm seas and fewer crowds.
