Germany has a temperate oceanic climate in the west and north, transitioning to a more continental climate in the east and south. Rainfall is distributed throughout the year, summers are warm to hot (20-30°C), winters cold with regular snowfall especially in elevated areas and the east. The Alps create a sharp climatic boundary in the south with heavy snow from November to April.

🌸 Spring

March-May

Mild and progressively warmer with wildflowers, beer garden opening season from April. Late frosts possible in March-April especially in Berlin and eastern regions.

Tips: Pack layers including a light jacket; umbrella useful; hiking trails in Alps still snow-covered above 1500m

☀️ Summer

June-August

Warm to hot with long days, outdoor festivals, beer gardens packed. July-August peak tourist season especially for Rhine Valley, Bavaria, and coastal resorts. Occasional heatwaves 35°C+.

Tips: Sunscreen and light clothing essential; book accommodation 2-3 months ahead; air conditioning less common than in southern Europe

September-November

Spectacular foliage especially in October, Oktoberfest in September, fewer crowds after school holidays end. Temperatures drop sharply in November. Christmas markets begin late November.

Tips: Ideal hiking weather; pack layers; October-November bring increased rainfall; perfect for wine harvest in Rhine and Moselle valleys

December-February

Cold with regular snowfall, especially in Bavaria, Black Forest, and eastern Germany. Christmas markets create magical atmosphere December through December 24. January-February quietest tourist season with lowest prices.

Tips: Heavy winter clothing essential (temperatures can reach -10 to -15°C); Alpine skiing season December-March; some outdoor attractions have reduced hours

Christmas Markets

Magical winter markets across Germany selling crafts, food, mulled wine (Glühwein). Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt most famous. Dresden Striezelmarkt oldest. Cologne, Munich, Stuttgart also spectacular.

Mid-September to first Sunday in October (16 days)
Oktoberfest Munich

World's largest beer festival with 14 massive tents, traditional Bavarian culture, 7 million visitors. Book hotels 6+ months ahead. Wear dirndl or lederhosen.

Mid-February (10 days)
Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale)

Major film festival alongside Cannes and Venice. Red carpet premieres, international cinema, public screenings. Cold but culturally rich time to visit Berlin.

Week before Ash Wednesday (February/March)
Cologne Carnival

Massive street festival with costumes, parades, parties. Rosenmontag parade on Monday is highlight. Entire city celebrates - businesses close.

May, July, August, September (different dates at different locations)
Rhine in Flames

Spectacular fireworks displays along Rhine River with illuminated castles, boat flotillas, wine festivals. St. Goar/St. Goarshausen in September largest.

Late July - late August
Wagner Festival Bayreuth

Prestigious opera festival in Wagner's custom-built Festspielhaus. Tickets allocated by lottery - apply year in advance. Peak of German opera culture.

Summer (July) and Winter (November-December)
Tollwood Festival Munich

Alternative culture festival with music, theater, food, and winter market. Eclectic mix of world music and performance art in Olympiapark.

April 30 - May 1
Walpurgis Night

Witches' night celebrations especially in Harz Mountains. Bonfires, costumes, pagan traditions. Wernigerode and Brocken peak are epicenters.

Various summer dates
Love Parade / Fusion Festival

Electronic music festivals. Fusion near Berlin in June - 70,000 attendees, camping, art. Love Parade legacy continues in smaller events.

Early May (3 days)
Hamburg Harbor Birthday

World's largest harbor festival celebrating 1189 founding. Ship parades, fireworks, maritime activities, concerts. Over 1 million visitors.

Late September - mid-October
Cannstatter Volksfest Stuttgart

Second-largest beer festival after Oktoberfest. Less touristy, more local, on Stuttgart fairgrounds. Beer tents, rides, traditional atmosphere.

Mid-May to early June
Dresden Music Festival

Classical music festival in historic venues - Semperoper, Frauenkirche, palaces. International orchestras and soloists in baroque city setting.
