Sandhafen draws a casual, mixed-age crowd of Kiel locals and visitors, from after-work professionals grabbing a beer on the pontoon to students and families stopping by earlier in the evening; there is no dress code beyond summer-casual, and flip-flops and shorts fit right in. The atmosphere is relaxed and sociable, built around sand underfoot, deck chairs, and palm trees planted directly on the floating pontoon over the Kiel fjord -- a novelty that gives the bar its billing as Germany's only fully floating beach bar. Music comes from resident and guest DJs playing chilled house and lounge sets through the afternoon, building toward a livelier programme as the evening goes on, though the venue stays a bar rather than a club. The drinks programme is beer- and cocktail-led, with Kiel-brewed lagers, mojitos, caipirinhas, and frozen cocktails as the best sellers, priced modestly compared with Sylt's beach bars. Sandhafen operates seasonally, typically from spring through early autumn, open daily from early afternoon until late; weeknights are noticeably calmer than Friday and Saturday, when the pontoon and surrounding waterfront fill with a younger after-work and weekend crowd. There is no cover charge and no table reservations system -- seating on the pontoon is first-come, first-served, so arriving early on warm evenings is the best way to guarantee a spot on the sand rather than standing at the rail.
