Laboe Naval Memorial (Marine-Ehrenmal)

The Laboe Naval Memorial was built between 1927 and 1936 at the entrance to Kiel Fjord to commemorate German sailors lost in the First World War, funded partly through a public campaign led by the German Navy League, and its 72-meter tower, shaped to evoke a ship's bow or a stylized breaking wave, was completed under the Nazi government and later rededicated after 1945 as a memorial to sailors of all nations lost at sea in both world wars. The site includes an exhibition hall tracing the history of the German Navy from the 19th century Imperial fleet through both world wars to the modern Bundesmarine, with ship models, uniforms, and displays on the naval arms race that preceded the First World War and the U-boat campaigns of the Second. Visitors can climb the tower's viewing platform for panoramic views over Kiel Fjord, the Baltic Sea, and the Kiel Canal entrance, one of the busiest waterways in the world. Beside the memorial, the preserved German Type VIIC submarine U-995, one of the few surviving World War Two U-boats worldwide, is open for visitors to walk through its original cramped crew quarters and control room. Restoration of both the tower and the submarine has been ongoing, with U-995 maintained as a static museum exhibit since it was placed on the site in 1972. The memorial's postwar reinterpretation, from a purely German war memorial to a broader monument for sailors of all nations, reflects Germany's wider 20th-century reckoning with its military history.
