Bad Segeberg Kalkberg and Segeberger Forst Trail

This 11 km loop starts at Am Kalkberg 1 in Bad Segeberg, a 15-minute walk from Bad Segeberg train station in central Schleswig-Holstein, and requires no permit for the public trail network. The route climbs about 90 m to the summit of the Kalkberg, a gypsum outcrop that is unusually prominent for the flat surrounding landscape, before continuing into the adjoining Segeberger Forst woodland. The path to the summit is a well-maintained gravel and stepped trail with a short, moderately steep pitch near the top, while the forest sections beyond follow packed dirt tracks under mixed beech and pine cover that provide good shade for most of the loop. Landmarks include the Kalkberg summit viewpoint overlooking Bad Segeberg and the Grosser Segeberger See, the entrance to the Kalkberg's show caves and open-air theater venue partway down, and quiet forest stretches within the Segeberger Forst that are a habitat for the rare Segeberg bat colony in the caves beneath the hill. Hikers seeking a shorter walk can turn around at the summit viewpoint for a round trip of about 4 km. There are no refuge huts, but the town below the Kalkberg has cafes and restaurants, and a public toilet is available near the summit trailhead. Layers are worth carrying since temperature can drop noticeably once the route enters the shaded forest sections.
