Görlitz Old Town, Untermarkt and Peterskirche

Görlitz escaped significant damage in both World Wars, leaving the city with more than 4,000 protected historic buildings spanning Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles across an old town that has drawn frequent use as a film backdrop for this reason. The Untermarkt, the old town's central square, is ringed by tall, ornately gabled merchant houses including the Renaissance-era Ratsapotheke with its two sundials, and gives the strongest single frame of the city's architectural density. A short walk toward the Neisse river brings the twin spires of the Peterskirche into view, best photographed from the Altstadtbrücke pedestrian bridge, which also looks directly across the river into Zgorzelec, the Polish town that was split from Görlitz after 1945. Late afternoon light warms the pastel plasterwork and sandstone detailing of the Untermarkt's facades, while the square's arcaded northeast corner, near the Ratsapotheke, gives an angle that includes several of the finest gabled houses in a single composition. December transforms the Untermarkt with a Christmas market and warm string lighting against the historic facades, a strong contrast to the square's quieter character the rest of the year. Because Görlitz receives markedly fewer tourists than Dresden, the Untermarkt rarely feels crowded even at midday, though side streets such as Peterstrasse and Neissstrasse offer an even quieter alternative for detail shots of individual doorways and window surrounds.
